Our Approach
Every business problem
is a people problem. I have found this wisdom, spoken by a sage mentor, to be absolutely true. Organizations don’t have business problems. They have people problems that hinder their ability to achieve their goals, realize their potential, and stay in business for the long term.
Solving these problems requires the implementation of The 5 Rhythms. A series of practices that if diligently and properly executed, produces a pipeline of engaged, capable, and confident people equipped to solve for success. A pipeline of leaders ready to lead, managers fit to manage, individual contributors energized to deliver great results, and teams that are high functioning. These practices strengthen an organization’s ability to accomplish its mission today and into the future.
Senior leaders are responsible for applying these practices, creating the conditions for people to grow, develop, and realize their potential. Easier said than done. Leaders are terminally busy tackling the seemingly endless challenges of the day and responding to increasing levels of VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity). Why are so few organizations implementing The 5 Rhythms? In some cases leaders don’t know them. In others leaders haven’t made the daily effort required to make them a priority. Sometimes it’s a combination of both.
Organizations don’t drift toward success. The forces of entropy are ever at work to divert energy and resources to the urgent problems of the day, away from the practices that enable organizations to achieve great, long-term results. The only things that naturally happen in organizations are fear, confusion, dysfunction, and underperformance. When positive things happen it’s because there is a vision and a strategy. A plan and the tenacity to stick to it. Disciplined effort over time.
What If?
It frustrates and saddens me that more organizations don’t have these integral practices in place to help them solve their most pressing business problems. Why? Because I’m intrigued by the question, “What if?” What if every person discovered, fully developed, and utilized her or his portfolio of gifts and skills? What if every person was engaged in life-giving work? What if every person was given opportunities to be successful? What would be the impact on that person? On their family? On their organization? On their community?
These questions inspire my work and guide my approach. I love to see people grow and realize their potential. It’s one of the best parts of being human. Every person has gifts and potential that need to be discovered and developed. People want to be successful, to make a positive contribution to the world. People who are engaged in meaningful work have very different outcomes than those who aren’t. They find a unique sense of fulfillment and dignity. They exude an energy that’s contagious and positively impacts those around them. They tend to have better overall health and well-being.
In addition, I love to see organizations realizing their potential. Organizations more readily achieve their objectives when their people are engaged. When people are growing and achieving, so are their organizations, leading to higher performance outcomes in productivity, customer ratings, and profitability. I’m motivated by both outcomes: growing people AND winning organizations. Unfortunately, there are too many people who aren’t experiencing life-giving work or realizing their potential. As a result, organizations aren’t winning in a way they could be.
The Framework
I bring to this work two unique strengths. First, I have a genuine understanding and respect for the pressures and challenges leaders face. It’s a tough job to be an effective leader. I want leaders to succeed. I get a significant amount of satisfaction helping leaders get unstuck, solve problems, and remove obstacles that are preventing them from moving ahead. This has been a recurring theme of my career.
Second, I have the ability to sort and evaluate large collections of ideas, concepts, and approaches, and determine which will have the greatest impact. This has led me to build systems that produce sustained, long-term, organization-wide impact.
I’ve used these strengths to curate the best people and talent practices based on science and evidence-based research, and assemble them into the framework of The 5 Rhythms. These are the rhythms that if executed well, produce a pipeline of engaged talent, strengthening an organization’s ability to accomplish its mission today and into the future.
